The Flinders are calling! Don’t let it go to voicemail.
Read time: 2–3 min
There are many South Australian we’ve spoken to who haven’t taken the opportunity to make the short 3-hour drive north into some of the most amazing geological landscapes S.A. has to offer.
We set out in May, after being too hot and before it got too cold, to discover just what everyone’s been missing. Our first stop was a little closer to our Adelaide starting point in the Southern Flinders for a hike up Mount Remarkable in Melrose. Our second stop was farther north into the Napperby Valley, with our third being north another 2-hours we stopped and camped in Hawker for an all-day 60km 4-wheel drive excursion that takes the cake for Flinders adventure!
NOTE: These adventures were made possible by my Brother-in-Law, Matt and his trusty Mitsubishi Triton!
Cheers mate!

Our first stop, Melrose, South Australia, a town built at the base of a mountain and a bend in the road. If you’re looking to hike Mount Remarkable from Melrose, your easiest access will be to drive through the Melrose Caravan and Tourist Park entrance on Jess road. You’ll pass the park and continue up the hill which dead-ends to a could-de-sac parking lot. The trailhead leads in from there. It’s about a 5 hour hike round trip if you’re taking your time. The trail is narrow at times, with fairly steep drops-offs to your right as you ascend. Either trail-runners or light hikers are recommended for the conditions.
SAFETY TIP: Wear your gaiters if you’re hiking in the warmer spring to fall days. We found what appeared to be a substantial amount of snake holes along the trail.
So what we’re saying here is, pack your Huffy…
Eastern views along the switchbacks are fantastic motivation to keep going.
For those interested in bike trails. Between the base of the mountain and the Melrose Caravan & Tourist Park there is a killer bike track. So what we’re saying here is, pack your Huffy, camp in Melrose, hike the mountain, and have your drinks at Jacka Brothers Brewery, only a couple blocks away. The brewery is close enough that most of our hike was accompanied by rockin’ 90’s covers from their live weekend band!

Moving on up into the Flinders we stop in Napperby Valley!

Willow Springs is our next destination amongst the ancient Flinders Ranges.

Willow Springs is home to a generational family cattle/sheep Station that offers campers and 4-wheel adventurers a unique opportunity to experience the outback, it’s called Skytrek, and it’s massive! We clocked it at 61km/38 miles long, a full 8-hour drive through the outback.

Another neighboring 4-wheel drive trek is the Caernarvon track. We didn’t have the pleasure of embarking on that adventure, but look forward to heading back sometime soon to give it a go!
